In the Singapore cosmetic world, one of the latest products that have been getting a lot of traction and fame are Skinboosters. These products claim to do a lot of things to help you achieve the beautiful healthy skin you’ve always dreamed of. These claims include the following:
- They can brighten skin texture and provide the skin with a dewy, glowing texture.
- They can minimize wrinkles, sagging and pore size.
- They can improve skin elasticity.
- They can provide long-lasting and strong skin hydration.
Sounds too good to be true? I would actually beg to differ; Skinboosters have a plethora of great effects on the skin and I can attest to much of it firsthand. Recently, many of my patients have been asking me what Skinboosters are and whether or not all the hype is real. Hopefully, in this article, I’ll be able to better inform everyone on what they can actually do.
What Exactly are Skinboosters?
Skinboosters, also known as skin hydrators, are dermal filler injections that improve skin quality by improving skin hydration and elasticity, reducing imperfections (such as acne) and smoothing skin texture.
A skinbooster’s main component is hyaluronic acid, which helps in providing hydration, increase moisture levels and stimulate collagen production. Hyaluronic acid can hold up to 1000 times its own weight in water, which makes it an important ingredient for all kinds of moisturizing creams and serums.
But hyaluronic acid isn’t just useful for moisturizing skin, it can also:
- improve the elasticity of the skin
- aid in collagen production
- serve as an anti-oxidant
- reduce inflammation of acne and other scars
- speeds up the healing of wounds
In Singapore, two Skinboosters which have reached widespread use are Restylane and Teosyal. I will briefly discuss these two and give you an idea on which one suits you better.
Restylane Vital/Vital Light Skinboosters
Restylane was the very first Skinboosters to be introduced in the cosmetic market of Singapore. Restylane Skinboosters are made primarily in hyaluronic acid and can contain up to 20mg/ml of hyaluronic acid in each syringe. Restylane Skinboosters cost around $500 to $1000 per syringe.
Teosyal Redensity 1
Teosyal Redensity 1, or RD1, is a skinbooster manufactured in Switzerland. Unlike Restylane which is composed entirely of hyaluronic acid, Teosyal RD1 contains 3 efficient and powerful antioxidants (including glutathione), 2 minerals, 1 vitamin and 8 amino acids.
This makes it effective for improving skin health, improving collagen production, and hydration. Teosyal RD1 costs around $600 to $1100 per syringe.
Where can Skinboosters be injected?
Skinboosters can be microinjected on areas in the face, neck, shoulders and upper chest. Each type of skinbooster has different uses and some Skinboosters can only be injected on certain specific areas to get the most out of it.
Which Skinbooster is best for you?
There are multiple types of Skinboosters and each one has a purpose. In choosing between Restylane and Teosyal Redensity 1, you will have to determine which results are most important to you:
- Do you want to prioritize getting that dewy, glowing skin texture?
- Or do you prefer to increase skin hydration?
- Or would you rather want to focus on increasing the amount of collagen production in your skin?
Each patient has different needs and it is important that the proper skinbooster is chosen to meet those needs.
Restylane is used mainly for skin hydration
Restylane should only be injected into the underlying layer of skin after the dermis. Be careful because if it is injected on other layers of the skin, it can result in bumps all over the skin that can last for weeks. This makes Restylane ineffective in stimulating collagen production or giving your skin a dewy, glowing texture.
Teosyal RD1 is used for collagen stimulation and getting a dewy, glowing texture
Unlike Restylane, RD1 can be injected on both the surface of the skin and its deeper layers. If injected on the surface, it assists in achieving a dewy, glowing skin texture and increased collagen production.
If injected deeper though, it provides hydration to the skin, albeit for a shorter period compared to Restylane.
Restylane and Teosyal RD1 can be used with each other
If you employ a combination of the two Skinboosters, they can help cover for each other’s shortcomings. Using Restylane and Teosyal together will allow you to achieve full results compared to just using one of the Skinboosters.
How are Skinboosters Injected?
There are two ways to inject Skinboosters into the skin – through manual injections or using an injector device.
I always prioritize my patient’s comfort and safety above all else. When it comes to the procedure itself, the more comfortable method for the patient is through using the injector device. However, some Skinboosters are viscous and are unsuitable with the injector device as they can sometimes cause a blockage in the device. There is a very high chance that leaks could happen and would waste the skinbooster. Side effects are also more likely with the injector device as bruises and nodules could happen. An injector device will also damage big blood vessels during the injection compared to the more precise injections when done manually.
The consensus of most doctors is that manual injection of Skinboosters is the superior technique and is more recommended compared to using the injection device. This is due to manual injections being much more precise and careful compared to the injector device, which is prone to leakage and blockage. However, manual injections take a longer time to finish due to the delicate and careful steps needed.
When Should You Expect Results?
It varies among each person but results from Skinboosters should be expected after about 1 to 2 weeks after injection. There are immediate results but mild swelling and redness usually occur, lasting for at least a week.
It is also recommended that patients undergo exactly 3 sessions of Skinboosters as it has been shown through scientific research that optimal longevity and results are achieved after the third session. After this last session, effects of the Skinboosters are expected to last for at least 6 months.
If after the injections you feel that you want to have the effect reversed, you have two options – either wait for the effects to run out or ask your doctor to dissolve the hyaluronic acid using an ‘antidote’ called hyaluronidase.
How long is the recovery period?
Depending on the method of injection, the recovery period varies from 2 days for manual injections up to 4 or more days for injections done with the injector device. During this downtime, some bruising, redness and bumps will occur which can affect your daily routine and keep you out of normal activities. It is recommended that patients take some time off to rest and recover to avoid complications.
How to Choose the Right Doctor or Clinic for Skinboosters?
- Doctor’s Expertise
There are many different types of Skinboosters, and not all doctors or clinics in Singapore offers each one. It is best practice to look for a doctor or clinic that has experience and knowledge with as many types of Skinboosters as possible. This is important as he/she can give you advice on each Skinbooster and will be able to adjust much more flexible to your needs compared to doctors or clinics with more limited options.
- Method of Injections
Another important thing to take note in choosing a doctor or clinic is to determine whether they perform the Skinbooster injections manually or through an injector device. As I have previously suggested, manual injections are better when it comes to results but are longer procedures compared to using an injector device which takes a relatively shorter amount of time but with slightly worse results. Decide first on which technique you are more comfortable with and then choose a doctor or clinic that can offer it to you.
Skinboosters are one of your many options in achieving better skin quality and texture. However, the advantage of using Skinboosters over the other options is that it is a non-surgical procedure that does not require you to go under the knife. It is also a cheaper option (for some Skinboosters) and is recommended for first-timers to the world of cosmetics.
This is because Skinboosters don’t last very long (compared to facelift surgery) and can actually be reversed by using hyaluronidase. This gives the patient the freedom to back out if he/she is not satisfied with the results.
Nevertheless, Skinboosters have gained enough popularity and trust throughout Singapore and other countries such as Taiwan and Hong Kong that there is no need to worry as long as you are able to pick an experienced and knowledgeable doctor to do the injections.
