Singapore Doctors Weigh in on Nose Threadlifts and Nose Fillers

During the earlier years, the only way to correct a bulbous nose tip and flat nose bridge is through surgical rhinoplasty. Popularly known as the very first “nose job”, surgical rhinoplasty is an invasive procedure that entails rigorous plastic surgery. Because of the risks and side effects on top of staggering costs that come with this type of procedure, only a few courageous individuals take this route to achieve the nose that they have always dreamed of.

You might be one of the many Singaporeans who have always longed to improve your nose but have misgivings of going under the knife. If that is the case, then this article is specifically written for you.

Advancement in the aesthetic industry continues to develop and, yes, there are already ways to correct flat and bulbous noses significant to Southeast Asians without undergoing a major operation.

What is Nose Threadlift?

Nose threadlift is an aesthetic procedure that was developed 15 years ago in Seoul, South Korea. To augment the nose, this procedure makes use of polydioxanone (PDO) threads.

How is Nose Threadlift Performed?

Threadlift

A nose threadlift procedure starts with a thorough cleansing of the part of the nose that needs the treatment. Depending on the pain tolerance of a patient, either numbing cream or anaesthesia may be applied on the area where the threads will be inserted to ensure that the patients do not feel any discomfort during the procedure. Some doctors mark the points on the nose to serve as guides when inserting the threads into the skin. After this, the threads are put into the nose using an injection. The threads that are set in place work to lift the part of the nose that needs reshaping. Likewise, it helps promote collagen production to enhance the nose lift.

The number of threads used may differ between patients and will depend greatly on the kind of contour that a patient wants to see as a result of the procedure.

What Are Nose Fillers?

Nose fillers are liquid substances, such as hyaluronic acid and calcium hydroxyapatite that are used to inject into the skin to give it more volume. As compared to nose threadlift, nose fillers have been around since the 1800s. However, the earlier types of fillers used were deemed incompatible for the body. It was only in the early 2000s that this procedure became sought after when FDA approved brands like Radiesse and Restylane were used for the treatment.

How Are Nose Fillers Used in a Nose Augmentation Procedure?

A nose filler procedure is done in four steps:

  1. Cleansing of the area where the treatment is to be done.
  2. Application of numbing cream on the target areas.
  3. Injection of the nose fillers.
  4. Moulding of the nose to achieve the proper height and shape desired.

How Do I Know Which Procedure is Best Suited for Me?

There are several factors that can help patients assess whether nose fillers or a nose threadlift is best to address their aesthetic needs. The table below shows an extensive comparison of the two nose augmentation procedures.

NOSE FILLERS

NOSE THREADLIFT

Contour

  • Able to correct bumps and curves of the nose bridge
  • Best for adding height for the nose bridge
  • Easier to achieve the desired nose contour because of the doctor’s ability to mould the fillers accordingly
  • Best for achieving a thin nose bridge.
  • Able to lift nose tip
  • Gives the nose a better definition
  • More compact than fillers

Cost

  • Starts at $400
  • Number of threads used in the procedure is a factor that greatly affects the cost

Downtime

  • Minimal to no downtime
  • Minimal to no downtime

Results

  • Can last for 1 year
  • Reversible
  • Can last for a maximum of 2 years

Risks/Side Effects

  • Blindness
  • May cause the nose’s shape to be wider
  • Skin necrosis
  • Infection
  • Scarring
  • Threads may extrude or move from a designated place
  • Temporary swelling after the procedure

Choosing between the two procedures is influenced by the type of nose contour a patient wants to achieve. Other factors that can be considered are the skill of the doctor performing the augmentation, as well as the kind of skin that the patient has. It is always best to consult with the doctor first prior to deciding on which procedure to take.

On a side note, some doctors in Singapore tend to shy away from using fillers due to the critical side effects that a mistake in doing the procedure can do. As stated in the table above, patients who happen to have an inexperienced doctor perform nose augmentation using fillers are highly exposed to the risk of going blind or getting skin necrosis.

What Are the Most Recommended Nose Threadlift Brands in Singapore?

One of the side effects of threadlift is thread extrusion. In my years of practice, I have found 2 brands that work best in avoiding this side effect, thus enabling my patients to enjoy optimum results of their nose augmentation. These brands are ArtLift and UltraV.

What Are the Most Recommended Brands of Nose Filler in Singapore?

When it comes to nose fillers, there are a lot of brands available. To narrow down your choices, I recommend going for products that are classified as G Prime. Of course, you would want your nose to retain its moulded shape despite encountering any pressure put on it. Brands that are considered G Prime are firmer and more able to sustain the contour of the nose. Nose fillers that are graded lower than this qualification are softer and prone to spreading.

For temporary fillers, my number one choice is Belotero Intense, while for semi-permanent fillers, I usually go for Ellanse.

What Are the Qualities I Should Look for in a Doctor Who Can Perform Nose Augmentation Using Fillers and Threads?

Doctor Qualities

The kind of service that you get is ultimately the main factor you should consider before embarking on any aesthetic procedure. The products have their own proven claims, however, if these are not used appropriately, then you just might end up with botched results.

When searching for aesthetic doctors, consider the following:

  1. Honesty and openness. You may come into your assessment fully convinced of a certain procedure that you would like to take. An honest doctor would always want what is best for a patient. He or she should be able to communicate with you the pros and cons of a procedure. Likewise, he or she should be able to give you advice on which procedure you are best suited for.
  2. Knowledge and skill. Performing nose augmentation using fillers and threads is not easy. Doctors who are experts on this have undergone several trainings and certifications to be able to master the craft. Knowledge and skill account for safety. You can be assured that your procedure will go on well and that no major side effects can happen when your doctor has several years of successful procedures to back up his experience. You can also ask for a portfolio of their past patients so you may have an idea of what the results of your treatment may look like.
  3. Products used. There are many products available in the market for fillers and threads. It is best to know that your doctor only uses authentic products and is also well-equipped to use them. You can always count on brands that offer firmer and long-lasting results. At the same time, do check whether you are getting a brand new set of threads or fillers for your procedure. Some clinics reuse fillers and threads that have not been used during previous procedures. This practice posts high risks when it comes to sanitation, so be vigilant and always check that the products you get are not tampered prior to use.
